Seems that the present wave of joy gathers some energy from the tension about a good but aging president trying to run for a second term. But also for many I suspect there is joy at the possibility of a long denied reality, that of the first female president, first female president of color in fact. As I read your article, another emotion came to mind, a positive one, one that I think is universal and that is hope. It does spring eternal in us, at least in my experience. I think Hope is the core of what happens during elections and is very active in all politics, and often it is very, disappointed with the reality of the outcomes… And then gets excited again for the next election.
